SYNOPSIS

Andrés O’Farrill is a rocker in his forties who is stuck. He is stuck profession- ally, personally and worse: musically. He went from being a talented musician to composing shitty songs for pop artists and giving guitar lessons to a ten-year-old boy. The only thing that seems constant in his day is the persistent call from a mysterious contact on his cell phone: EGO.

After being rejected by Romina’s music producer, Damián, and after Anuar, his landlord, changes the lock of his door, leaving him out, Andrés is left lying outside his apartment. Something unexpected changes everything when Tito, his friend and owner of the Par de Ases Bar, tells him that the legendary music producer Tessa Martel is looking for new talent around the City for the night.

Without a second thought, Andrés arrives at the Par de Ases Bar, accompanied only by his guitar. On the stage, he sings a pop song, and although he has a privileged voice and plays very, very well, he doesn’t look comfortable. His performance suddenly ends when a fight breaks out at the bar.

Moving on from the bar, Andrés finds himself in a crowded area filled with musicians who have the same thing in mind as him: performing for Tessa Martel. After a couple of missed attempts on making it to the list of an open-mic, Andrés meets Los Cuchis, a band formed by Carmen, Rigo and Santo, who are looking for a guitarist who knows how to read music. With them he ventures to find a bar where they can play; however, they are all full.

After some time looking for bars to play, Los Cuchis gave up, making Andrés go back to look for Tessa Martel by himself. In his odyssey, he gets into endless problems: he loses his guitar, gets his ass kicked, he gets robbed, left behind on the streets with a Teporocho, and he even ends up in jail. It is in jail, at his lowest point, where he calls the only person who has been looking for him all night long: EGO.

EGO stands for Emmanuel González O’Farrill, his former bandmate and cousin. Emmanuel is now a famous musician known as EMA. After being released from jail, Andrés reaches the end of EMA’s concert, who invites him to play the encore, the last two songs.

After the concert, they get to the after party of the concert and this is where Andrés realizes that Emmanuel is still the same person, the person who left him behind, the same person who took his opportunity to play with Tessa Martel away, ten years ago. Andrés leaves the party with no idea where to go from there.

He ends his night, as usual, in a bar. There, he runs up with an unrecognizable Romina, who goes from being a pop-star sensation to a more down to earth singer and songwriter. They talk and Romina makes him see that music does not depend on whether you are famous or if it sells, it exists and that should be enough. Andrés finds comfort in her words, and after he tells her about his night, Romina reveals what Andrés had wanted to hear all along: that Tessa Martel is in that same bar where they are standing. Andrés gets up and goes directly towards the stage. But after a few chords, Tessa Martel leaves the bar. Petrified, Andrés cannot believe that she left. But he composes himself, straightens up, and plays the best song he’s ever played in his life.

THE JOURNEY MACHO

SYNOPSIS

Coming out of a long and unjust imprisonment, Dr. Carlos Espejo rediscovers feelings that he had long forgotten. During the journey that she undertakes in search of her son, she once again experiences the freedom and fatigue of long walks, the benefits of the absorbent waters of a lake, the touch of the sun and the cold of those Andean regions on her skin. The film takes the time to detail and share with us this return to life, which is a return to nature. Temporary accommodation and occasional work mark the progress of the trip. Nothing else seems to exist (more) than the present of this body and the spaces through which it walks. But it is because it is kept out of the field that the past gradually takes up more and more space. Deafening silence, it is at the origin of everything that is seen and experienced here. A way, subtle and powerful at the same time, to approach the years of violence without falling into the complacency of its representation.

DAMN HOBO!

SYNOPSIS

Set in a neon-lit Mexico City, Damn Hobo! tells the story of a homeless man’s literal and figurative trip through the streets. When the sun goes down over the huge city, the darkness of night slowly transforms the man into a musical entity. This short film peeks into the experience of a rough sleeper and in doing so, challenges expectations through the establishment of music as the universal language.

We are at the Biarritz Festival Latin America!

We are at the Biarritz Festival Latin America!

The 30th festival’s edition (27 September – 3 October) celebrates Peru as its Guest Country of Honor

On the occasion of the bicentennial of Peru’s independence, which closes the cycle of independence commemorations in Latin America, the Biarritz Latin America Festival has decided to dedicate its 2021 focus to the rich and vibrant culture of this country.

Its unique gastronomy, which combines the infinite variety of local products with the culinary cultures that arrived after the migratory waves, shines all over the world. The gourmets of the world know that it is undoubtedly in Peru where the best culinary experiences are lived, from the tables of the great chefs to a ceviche savored on the thumb at La Punta.

Anyone who has set foot in a Peña knows the remarkable vitality of their music nurtured by Creole and African roots. The powerful balanced rhythms of the chicha de los Mirlos or the Wemblers of Iquitos excite dancers eager for tropical miscegenation, from Brooklyn to Buenos Aires.

The literary reputation of Peru, personified by the prestigious figure of Mario Vargas Llosa or those of Alfredo Bryce Echenique and Alonso Cueto, is no longer to be done. Even today, his literature abounds with new talents.

From Armando Robles Godoy in the late 60s to Francisco Lombardi in the 80s through the Chaski Group, Peruvian cinema has shone on the world cultural scene, but sporadically, until the turn of the 2000s. Several filmmakers, who have come to Biarritz on occasions, made themselves known to those eager for discoveries: Josué Méndez (Dias de Santiago, Dioses), Claudia Llosa (Madeinusa, La Teta asustada), the brothers Diego and Daniel Vega (Octubre El Mudo, La Bronca) or, very recently, Melina León (Canción sin Nombre). For about ten years, Peruvian cinematography, encouraged by stimulating public policies, has been going through a period of great dynamism, marked by a boom in regional production and the appearance of many young filmmakers.

It is this effervescence that the festival will strive to capture throughout its multidisciplinary programming.

Hot Docs 2021’s REBEL LOVE acquired by Latin Quarter

Hot Docs 2021’s REBEL LOVE acquired by Latin Quarter

“Will young love be enough to hold their family together as they walk down this uncertain road?” Heather Haynes

We’re delighted to have acquired Alejandro Bernal’s latest documentary film Rebel Love (Amor Rebelde) premiered at the 2021 edition of Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, the largest North American documentary festival. Alejandro is an EMMY Award-winning director who has covered current affairs around the Americas for over a decade, producing specials for networks like Univision, Al Jazeera English and Discovery Channel, among many others.

Heather Haynes from Hot Docs, said about Rebel Love: “In this love story born in the midst of war, two FARC-EP combatants, Cristian and Yimarly, meet and fall in love. As the peace accords between FARC-EP and the Colombian Government begin to play out, the young couple is filled with hope at the opportunity to start a new life and a family together. But soon they come to realize that love outside of the ranks in the military is not as ideal as they imagined. Having to build a home and find work proves to be an almost insurmountable challenge, as they must make difficult decisions that could tear them apart. With a baby on the way, the political climate escalates as many former FARC-EP guerillas fear for their safety. Will young love be enough to hold their family together as they walk down this uncertain road?”
