We are at the Biarritz Festival Latin America!

The 30th festival’s edition (27 September – 3 October) celebrates Peru as its Guest Country of Honor

On the occasion of the bicentennial of Peru’s independence, which closes the cycle of independence commemorations in Latin America, the Biarritz Latin America Festival has decided to dedicate its 2021 focus to the rich and vibrant culture of this country.

Its unique gastronomy, which combines the infinite variety of local products with the culinary cultures that arrived after the migratory waves, shines all over the world. The gourmets of the world know that it is undoubtedly in Peru where the best culinary experiences are lived, from the tables of the great chefs to a ceviche savored on the thumb at La Punta.

Anyone who has set foot in a Peña knows the remarkable vitality of their music nurtured by Creole and African roots. The powerful balanced rhythms of the chicha de los Mirlos or the Wemblers of Iquitos excite dancers eager for tropical miscegenation, from Brooklyn to Buenos Aires.

The literary reputation of Peru, personified by the prestigious figure of Mario Vargas Llosa or those of Alfredo Bryce Echenique and Alonso Cueto, is no longer to be done. Even today, his literature abounds with new talents.

From Armando Robles Godoy in the late 60s to Francisco Lombardi in the 80s through the Chaski Group, Peruvian cinema has shone on the world cultural scene, but sporadically, until the turn of the 2000s. Several filmmakers, who have come to Biarritz on occasions, made themselves known to those eager for discoveries: Josué Méndez (Dias de Santiago, Dioses), Claudia Llosa (Madeinusa, La Teta asustada), the brothers Diego and Daniel Vega (Octubre El Mudo, La Bronca) or, very recently, Melina León (Canción sin Nombre). For about ten years, Peruvian cinematography, encouraged by stimulating public policies, has been going through a period of great dynamism, marked by a boom in regional production and the appearance of many young filmmakers.

It is this effervescence that the festival will strive to capture throughout its multidisciplinary programming.
